Davao booters battle Eastern Visayas team

By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

DAPITAN CITY---Defending its title might be an uphill battle for Davao Region's secondary boys football team in the 2011 Palarong Pambansa which formally open at the JRMSU Sports Complex here today.

Coach Ramonito Carreon, who mentored Davao's gold medal finish in the Tarlac Palaro last year, downplayed an easy trip to the finals saying that this year's format is not favorable for everybody.
Carreon said in an interview that only the top team of every bracket will advance to the semifinals.

"There will no longer be a quarterfinal round. It's going to be a very tough fight just to make it to the semis. We are grouped in a heavy bracket so we still don't know what to expect," Carrreon said.

Davao will go up against Eastern Visayas at the start of the football competition set at 4 p.m. at the Barcelona National High School. Both teams are entered in bracket A along with Mimaropa, Northern Mindanao and Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (Armm) regions.

"We will have to see how the other teams play. Against Eastern Visayas, I still don't have a game plan but I will meet with the boys and discuss with them how the competition will go,' Carreon said.

Tarlac Palaro veterans Jomar Acedo, Frances Jay Abrasaldo, Francis Patrick Lim, David Angelo Diamante, Charleston Franklin Uy, Danilo Lascuna, Jr. and Renz Rhey Napuran of Davao City will have to provide leadership for the team that will also have a handful of neophytes in the cast.

Beefing up the squad are Davao City's Roeder Stephen Ignacio, Datu Von Ismael Biruar and Leo Abunas as well as Compostela Valley's Anthony Antipolo, Reymart Cubon, Arnel Casil and Randy Josef Inguillo and Davao del Norte's Arsie Jay Bacasmas.

The Nestor Sorrosa-coached Davraa secondary boys basketball team, meanwhile, will test its mettle against Cagayan Valley in the opener on Monday.
