Air Force faces Kaya; Global-Army duel up

Leader Air Force Rider faces Kaya Cignal in a critical United Football League clash Sunday at the University of Makati pitch.

The Airmen are targeting maximum points in the 2 p.m. duel that would put them closer to clinching the crown for the second straight year of the league backed by LBC Hari ng Padala.

With 23 points - seven points ahead of second-running Global Smartmatic - and with only three games left in their schedule, the Airmen can seal the title with two more victories.

The Air Force-Kaya clash is just one of the three important matches set at UMak, giving local football fans a rare treat.

Though national team standouts Anton del Rosario and Aly Borromeo have returned to power Kaya, they have continued to struggle collecting just four points in the last three games.

Air Force blanked Kaya, 3-0, in the first round with national players  Chieffy Caligdong, Ian Araneta and Yanti Barsales scoring a goal each.

Barsales and Araneta are among the scoring leaders in the league.

In another match, Global hopes to start its uphill climb to steal the crown from Air Force.

They are hard-pressed for a victory against a formidable Army Fritz and Macziol side in the 4 p.m. game.

Global's campaign got off to a promising start with four straight wins, but a run of four draws coupled by the Airmen's return to form have dimmed their chances of unseating the champions.

That's why they are left with no recourse but to do better than the 1-1 result they claimed against Army in the first round.

Army is still in the title race with 15 points, just one behind Global, but their chances will also hinge on the result of Air Force's last three matches.

Bottom teams Green Archers and Navy meet in the last match at 6 p.m. with both squads hoping to avoid relegation.
