Baguio: Goshen football squads rule Karika Cup

THE rain-soaked Karika grassroots football cup on May 30 literally produced champions out of the mud at the Melvin Jones Football grounds.

Two Goshen Land Football Teams ruled two age group divisions in the rain or shine grassroots football tournament.

The 12 and under Palaro-Goshenland football team defeated the famed Baguio Cinderella Ladies' Team (2-0), Pinsao Football Team (7-0),and the New Life Football Team (8-0) in the 7-aside monthly tournament semi-finals.

Led by 12-year-old team captain Mike Arbella, and coached by former Ateneo football team player Gatan Dalang, the team blanked out Pinsao in the finals with a whopping 5-0 score.

The Goshen Land-Palaro team banded together again in last week's tournament after their stint in the Palarong Pambansa.

Arbella was supported by his team mates James Mansueto, 12, co-team captain, Neo Conde, 12, right winger, Don and Daniel Allen, left wingers, Carlo and Samson Sungay, defender, Wallace Calsie, goalkeeper, Ricky Ariola, 12, striker and guest goalie Dean Carlos.

The Goshen Land ten and under team struggled with one loss in the eliminations, which challenged the team to blank out all their opponents in the remaining semis games.

Their finals game was the most difficult in the tournament as the weekend rain intensified in the afternoon. While the 10 and under Goshen Land team were newbies in the sport, having only trained for three months also under Coach Gatan Dalang, they persevered throughout their seven aside game against more experienced boys from the Bonifacio Elementary School and trainees at the Melvin Jones Football Academy.

The 10 and under Goshen Land football team scored 2-0 in the championship game. The Goshen Land ten and under Football Team is composed of elementary students from different private and public schools in Baguio.

They are Daniel Felix, 9, midfielder; Don Peredo, 10, midfielder; Ricky Kim, 10, striker; Samson Cabforo, 10, defender; Carlo Medrano, defender; Neo Escomi-endo, striker; and Jon Shadrach Bangsoy, 10, goalkeeper.

The team also won the April Karika Cup ten under title this year.

The final results of the May Karika Cup are - 12 under: champion - Palaro Goshenland Team; 1st runner-up - Pinsao Football Team; 3rd runner-up - New Life Football Team.

In the 10 under, champion was Goshen Land Football Team; 1st runner-up - Melvin Jones Football Academy; and 2nd runner-up, Team Brazil.

In the 8- under, champion was Team Brazil; 1st runner-up - Melvin Jones Football Academy; 2nd runner-up - Melvin Jones Football Academy; and 2nd runner-up - Small World Christian School.

The successful performance of the Baguio football team in the various local and national competitions will serve as an inspiration to other interested football enthusiasts to embrace the sport and become prestigious players in the future. (Dexter A. See)
