Philippine Team roundup: Azkals in natl anthem bout; POC assures no junket; PHL teams ready for SEA

by Angeli Sabillo
Azkals trained to sing the National Anthem
After winning against the Bonner SC Under-19 team at their two-week training camp in Germany, the Philippines men’s national football team Azkals took a break to engage in a singing contest of “Lupang Hinirang.”
“We have a great atmosphere here and the rapport among players in the camp is very encouraging. But we also want to get the team more inspired, show some nationalistic fervor,” said Azkals team manager Dan Palami.
That is why Palami offered 1,500 Euros (roughly P94,000) to the winning group of Azkals who can sing a decent rendition of the national anthem.
Inquirer revealed that of the 22-man team, only six are home grown. The rest grew up abroad, having one or both Filipino parents.
The Azkals are currently training in Duren, Germany for their FIFA World Cup qualifier against Sri Lanka.

Assistant coach Edwin Cabalida explained that while the teen team Bonner SC are young, they are not pushovers, playing in Division I of the Junior Bundesliga and being a farm team for the national league or Bundesliga players.
POC: No more junkets
Meanwhile, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) assured that Indonesia won’t be another junket for sports officials assigned for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games (SEAG).
"The aim of the Philippine team is success and not the formation of the largest delegation possible. Each sport has a team manager that works daily for the team's welfare and is a conduit to the working group. Wala na 'yung dating sistema na 'turista," POC deputy secretary general Mark Joseph said.
Elections of sports heads approved
Joseph also confirmed the elections of Police Gen. Luzas Managuelod, Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero and Enrico Vasquez as muay thai, shooting and karatedo association heads.
However, the karatedo leadership is being contended by Go Teng Kok who is also claiming to be the official leader of the association. Go already filed a court case against Vasquez and some POC officials.
PH Teams ready for SEA Games
The Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) said they have already formed the national volleyball team in preparation of the 26th Southest Asian Games on Nov. 11 to 25 in Indonesia.
PVF president Gener Dungo said , “Most are young players in both lineups because we’re preparing for the future.”
He said they will also be scouting Fil-foreign players in the United States starting July after preparing for the 2011 Asian Women’s Club Championship this week in Vietnam.
Dungo thanked the recent Philippine National Games for giving them an opportunity to discover new talents.
Coached by Sinfronio Acaylar, the women's team is composed of Cherry Macatangay, Rachel Anne Daquis, Michelle Carolino, Dahlia Cruz, Mary Jean Balse, Suzanne Roces, Janette Doria, Nica Guliman, Pau Soriano, Hezzymei Acuna, Cristina Salak, Marietta Carolino and Patricia Torres.
Meanwhile, Cesael Delos Santos will coach the men’s team with Jeffrey Malabanan, Carlo Sebastian, Jessie Lopez, Paolo De Ocampo, Edmund Hu, Raffy Mosuela, Nino Jeruz, Dave Tormis, Rex Castro, Rodolfo Labrador, Alnakran Abdilla, Edjet Mabbayad, John Balse and Nestor Molate as members.
Two top Cebuano runners are eyeing a place in the national team and are hoping to join the Vietnam or Singapore Open to show that they meet the qualifying time for the Philippine team. Once theydo, they will then be recommended by the Philippine Sports Commission for the SEA Games.
Mendel Lopez, despite earning a recommendation from Philippine coach Roy Vence, was not able to make it into the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (Patafa) training pool because he joined the Arafura Games where he won a gold medal in the 10,000-meter run.
On the other hand, Mary Joy Tabal, according to Sun Star, did not receive an invitation because she is still unknown outside Cebu.
The two are still looking for sponsors who can finance their travel to Vietnam or Singapore.
With muay thai not accepted for the 26th SEA Games, the Philippine team will instead be preparing from the reportedly more prestigious World Muay Thai Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
World silver medalist Jay Harold Gregorio and 2009 SEA Games gold medalist Zaidi Laruan will lead the team of eight veteran muay fighters.
Coach Billy Alumno said they will train for three months in Bangkok to prepare for the tournament. Source
