Philippines appeals suspension of 2 Azkals

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has asked the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to allow Azkals team captain Aly Borromeo and midfielder Stephan Schrock to play in the Philippines’ away-game versus Kuwait.
PFF President Mariano “Nonong” Araneta sent a letter to the AFC Disciplinary Committee seeking reconsideration of its decision to suspend the 2 players.
Araneta argued that it would be unfair to bar the Azkals from playing its complete line-up against Kuwait on July 23.
He said that unlike the Philippines, Kuwait drew a bye to make it to the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers.

Borromeo and Schrock were dealt a one-game suspension for receiving 2 yellow cards each in the Azkals' qualifier versus Sri Lanka.
The 2 players played vital roles in the Azkals' 4-0 victory over the Sri Lankan Brave Reds last Sunday.
“We were discussing the matter and our chances for success are quite small as I assume,” Azkals coach Michael Weiss told ABS-CBN News.
Despite the suspension, Borromeo joined his team on Friday’s training session.
“Even though I can't play, I have to be there for the team,” said the Azkals team captain. “I should be there as a captain and I should be there as a leader on their side.”
Azkals co-captain Chieffy Caligdong, meanwhile, said the rest of the Nationals will really have to work hard to make up for the absence of Borromeo and Schrock.
“Tulungan siyempre. Kelangan ipakita namin sa kanila (Kuwaiti) na mahihirapan sila,” said Caligdong.
The team management is also bringing in Jason de Jong, Jerry Lucena, Ray Jonsson and Patrick Hinrichsen to beef up the Azkals.
Filipino-Spanish striker Angel Guirado said he believes the Azkals can be competitive against Kuwait.
“Kaya namin ang Kuwait,” he said. -- With a report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
