Cherifer Football Festival set

by Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

KIDS from Davao City and other parts in the Davao Region who are aged six to 12 years old are expected to join the Cherifer Football Festival set at the Tionko field on Saturday and Sunday.

Philippine Football Federation (PFF) technical director Aris Caslib on Thursday said the two-day activity will give the kids time to play soccer and at the same time meet new friends.
"We invite children to come and play at Agro field even if they don't belong to any football team. We assure them to have fun and learn basics of football like controlling the ball, dribbling and shooting," Caslib said during the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn on Thursday.

He said a similar festival have been conducted in other key cities in the country as FIFA, PFF and Cherifer share the same objective of promoting grassroots football development.

The first day of the festival, however, will be for children 12 years old and below while the second day will be for High School students.

"It will be two days of friendly event for football kids," Caslib said.

Cherifer trade marketing events coordinator Stefanie Cris Perez assured that children will enjoy the game booths they will set up at the huge field.

"Children who will be playing football or not can still join us. They can play at our game booths for free. Our mascot, Cherry Boy, will also be around to entertain participants," Perez said.

Tournament organizer Bernard Ocampo said the two-day festival is in cooperation with the ongoing 3rd FIFA Grassroots Pro-Active Course-Mindanao Region.

"We are looking into making this Cherifer football festival an annual event. It has very good turnout in other cities since its target is really the grassroots," Ocampo said.

The activity also serves as Davao FA's implementation of FIFA's concept of a grassroots program.

Bukidnon coach Alex Albarece and PFF's Mindanao coordinator Consure Manreza also graced the weekly DSA Forum sponsored by Tower Inn.
