Region 7 wins football gold medal

By Mike Limpag

In football, Central Visayas ended its bid on a strong note, behind the secondary boys football team’s 2-1 win defending champion Davraa.
Miguel Caindec, who scored the team’s second goal uabashedly cried while holding on to his gold medal.
“I have worked so hard for this. We all worked hard since the city Olympics and then the regional meet. All the efforts paid off,” said Caindec.
Coach Glen Ramos, on the other hand, said the team was very determined to win.
“It was a job well done,” said Ramos, who steered the team to their very first secondary title in 11 years. The last time Central Visayas won was in 2000, during the time of Dave Gerali, who is the assistant coach of Cviraa.
Ramos and the DBC team had to forfeit their match in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. since the schedule was in conflict with the Cebu City Olympics, the qualifier for the DepEd meets. Because of the forfeiture, DBC, undefeated in the Cesafi, lost its high school title and was threatened with a ban.
On the other hand, the elementary boys football squad lost in the final to Region 10, 3-1. The team was playing without captain Enzo Ceniza, who was given a red card in their semifinal match.

Palaro Football: Davao in finals

DAPITAN CITY -- Defending champion Davao Region secondary booters will try to keep their crown while the secondary cagers will try to make history in separate finals matches set Saturday.

The Davao eleven, coached by Ramonito "Lalas" Carreon, blanked Cagayan Valley, 5-0, in the semifinals at the Barcelona Elementary School Friday.

Davao City's Jomar Acedo led scoring with two goals as teammates Francis Patrick Lim, Franklin Charleston Uy and David Angelo Diamante added one goal each.

Davao topped their bracket with an unbeaten slate following a default win over Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao late Thursday afternoon.

Saturday's 9 a.m. titular clash will be a repeat of the Tarlac championship showdown where Davao was pitted against Central Visayas.

"It's a great challenge to face Cebu in the finals for the second time. I believe they are out for revenge. Cebu has bigger players but we we've got the speed. The players' skills of both teams are equal though. We are going to defend our title. We will go for gold," Lalas said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao.

He said this despite the absence of injured defender Arnel Casil of Compostela Valley.

Over at the Zamboanga del Norte Convention gym, the Nestor Sorrosa-coached Davao stunned National Capital Region (NCR), 98-79, in the semis.

Assistant coach Roger Rabago, said, "The Lord is good giving us the victory. NCR was bigger than us. Our players were able to grab steals that were converted into points. The boys were determined to win so they played hard against those giants."

Davao plays Calabarzon for the gold at 8 a.m. Saturday. The latter defeated Western Visayas in double overtimes. Western Visayas defeated Davao in the elimination round. (MLSA)
