Melvin Jones field eyed for football tourney

A DECENT football pitch would be impossible to put up in time for the Vergara–Domogan Street Kids Football Cup slated November.

But the City Government assured players to the month-long tournament that a more acceptable playing field come by November 27 will be up in the works.

“The City Government is currently undertaking a feasibility study on how we can improve Melvin Jones to serve its purpose as a decent football ground,” said Mayor Mauricio Domogan.

Representative Bernardo Vergara, for his part, said the current improvement being done at Burnham Park will also spill over to Melvin Jones.

“Improvement in Burnham Park will also include the rehabilitation of a football ground at the Melvin Jones but it will not make it in time for the tournament,” said Vergara.

Local football clubs have been clamoring for a decent football field for a quite some time as Melvin Jones remains unplayable but soccer enthusiasts have to make do with its present condition.

And with the opening of the Vergara–Domogan Cup, the Melvin Jones would still be in its sorry state.

Envisioned to help the needy, particularly the city’s street children, the first Vergara-Domogan Street Kids Football Club aims to help provide a decent home for Baguio’s under privileged.

It will be the first of its kind to be conducted in the city and in the country to help street kids with the football tournament helping the members of the Baguio Street Kids Football Club, which Goshen Land and Baguio United Football Club organized.

Seven divisions are set to compete for top honors with trophies for champion, first runner up, second runner up and third runner-up will be up for grabs.

Individual awards (best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, striker, fair play and MVP) will also be given out in the tournament.

Registration for the men’s open will be at P500, while the ladies’ open will have it at P300.

The different age group competitions starting from the 8 under up to 16 under for boys and girls will be at P200.
