"The pitch is amazing!" Coach Michael Weiss was all compliments Saturday about the condition of the green turf of the Rizal Stadium where the men's national teams of Sri Lanka and the Philippines took turns for practice sessions.
Team manager Dan Palami was also thrilled that the playing field the Azkals came back to will let them run better and make the ball roll the way they want it to roll. There is the also the home game factor.
"I'm confident that the guys will be able to play the way we should play considering the crowd and the better pitch," Palami said via Twitter.

Rizal memorial football stadium to host Kuwait

Manila, JUNE 23 (Sugod.com) – Rizal memorial football stadium has emerged as the top choice to host the World Cup qualifier between Kuwait and Philippines IF ever the national team managed to go past Sri Lanka on July 3 according to an article by Rick Olivares.
The home match for the second round of the AFC 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers will be played on July 28, 2011, less than a month after the first round winners are declared, and rizal memorial football stadium will be ready by then.
A successful hosting of the international event could paved way to establishing rizal memorial football stadium as the ‘true’ home of the Philippines national football team.
Prior to these matches, Panaad Stadium in Bacolod city has been considered a home to many international matches of the national team but federation officials chose the stadium in Manila as the ‘home’ for their FIFA World Cup campaign.
Rizal memorial football stadium last hosted an international football match in the 1991 Southeast Asian Games when the Philippines achieved a fourth place finish after losing 2-6 to Thailand and 2-nil to Singapore in the semi-finals and third place play-off respectively.
It will be almost 20 years until the RMFS will host another soon-to-be successful international football event. Source

Rizal can only seat 13,000

MANILA, Philippines - Organizers of the Azkals’ home game against Sri Lanka on July 3 will limit the spectators to around 13,000 to avoid overcrowding the 70-year-old Rizal Memorial Football Stadium for the highly anticipated Fifa World Cup Asian Qualifiers match.
Cathy Rivilla, general coordinator for the home match, said after installing individual seats at the grandstand and painting dividing lines in the bleachers in accordance with Fifa’s seat measurements, the Rizal venue can only host a capacity of 12,873 spectators.
The lower grandstand and VIP areas (blue section) will accommodate 1,872; the upper grandstand (yellow section) will seat 2,870; and the bleachers will have 8,131.

Rains may spoil RMSC football duel

Manila, Philippines - Preparations are in full swing for the Azkals’ home game against Sri Lanka on July 3 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, and yet there’s one thing organizers will definitely have no control of.
“It’s the weather,” said Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia, who’s making sure that the historic stadium will be in its top form for the highly-awaited soccer match.
“I hope the weather cooperates. Majority of the seats won’t be covered and people will get wet,” he said, considering that the match will be held in the rainiest days of the year.
The Philippine Football Federation under Mariano Araneta is at the helm of the preparations for the match expected to draw a crowd never been seen in local sports for a long time.
They expect a crowd of 15,000 to 20,000, mostly soccer fans who will even come in from the provinces. The last time a crowd that big came to the stadium was during the 1991 SEA

Old Rizal facelift nears completion

MANILA, Philippines - While the Azkals are holding their training camp in Duren, Germany, preparations are also in full swing to make their home turf – the decades-old Rizal Memorial Stadium – ready for their Fifa World Cup Asian qualifying match with Sri Lanka set July 3.
Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano Araneta reported that construction works at Rizal, including the installation of seats at the grandstand and bleachers areas and the dressing rooms for the two teams, are nearing completion and the venue should be available by June 20.
“Construction is on time and I have nothing to fear that Rizal won’t be ready (for the July 3 home game),” said Araneta. “Our target is by June 20, everything will be completed or on its finishing stages, at the very least.”
The 18,000-seater Rizal Memorial has not played host to a major international tournament since the 1991 Southeast Asian Game and needed renovation on majority of its facilities.
The pitch itself was refurbished last year though a memorandum of agreement between Rizal owner Philippine Sports Commission and De La Salle University, so just minor fixing had to be done there.
The PFF will also be renting a digital scoreboard (with timer) for the Azkals’ home game, according to Araneta.
Likewise, Araneta said the federation is coordinating with authorities for security plans and other matters such as parking and traffic arrangements.

MANILA, Philippines – The sprucing up of the Rizal Memorial Stadium for the Philippine football team’s first home match in Manila in a decade will be completed two weeks before the 2014 World Cup Qualifying’s first-round second-leg match against Sri Lanka on July 3.
Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta made the assurance on Monday, saying almost everything was in place for the match at the 80-year-old facility, which will seat 18,000 fans.
“The construction is on time,” Araneta said. “I have nothing to fear that the Rizal stadium won’t be ready.”

Phl Azkals to get 'feel' of home turf

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Azkals hope to immediately use the Rizal Memorial pitch to fully capitalize on the homefield advantage in the facility, site of their July 3 home game against Sri Lanka in the 2014 Fifa World Cup Asian qualifiers.
According to team manager Dan Palami, the plan is to hold practices at the refurbished pitch for a week from May 16 to 22 before heading to Iloilo for a friendly game and Cebu for their team-building sessions in the last week of May. By June 1, they intend to resume practices at Rizal Memorial right until their leave for Germany on June 12 for a two-week training camp.
“We’re hoping that by the 16th, we could already do our practices at Rizal Memorial, so we can familiarize ourselves with the pitch and get a general feeling on the area,” Palami told The STAR yesterday. “We really want to take advantage of the home game by getting practices in the stadium.
The Azkals are scheduled to play Sri Lanka on hostile grounds first, on June 29, before they host the second match on July 3 in Manila.
The football pitch at the decades-old Rizal Stadium has already been renovated by the facility’s owner, the Philippine Sports Commission through an agreement with De La Salle University, but would still need some work to make international standard.
“The pitch is not 100 percent ready. Our guys will be doing another inspection by tomorrow; we’ll be bringing flaglets para makita ang areas na dapat pa ayusin; mataas pa ang grass (We’ll inspect the pitch again and see what needs to be fixed as some of the holes are covered by the grass),” he said.
Overall, more work has to be done for Rizal Memorial to make it ready for the WC qualifiers. This includes fixing and marking the seats at grandstand and bleachers area, repairing the restrooms, putting up temporary dressing rooms for the two teams, match officials, and the secretariat, and improving the VIP lounge.
“They really should start now para ma-ready yung grandstand by game time,” Palami said.
After a one-month break, the Azkals will resume training on May 9 at the Ayala Alabang Country Club, where they will be encamped for a week before testing the pitch at Rizal Memorial.

PHL football officials satisfied with Rizal Memorial
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner Chito Loyzaga said so far Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano Araneta and Azkals team manager are satisfied with the renovations being done at the Rizal Memorial football field.
Loyzaga said Araneta and Palami have already inspected the venue that will be used for the second leg of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers between the Azkals and Sri Lanka on July 3.
"Natutuwa sila at nagagandahan din sila sa field and I think the condition would pass the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) standards," said Loyzaga.
He added the PSC and PFF have already discussed the other repairs that need to be done inside the stadium, including the field and the stands.
The PSC is in the initial phase of renovating the Rizal football field.
So far, the goal posts have already been installed as the field is already being used by De La Salle University, which funded the renovation of the football field two years ago.
